Bad Hair Day!



On the face of it standards seem to be slipping at the Coldstream Guards. However these were just mock mop-top guards taking part in a promo for Ford at Billingsgate Old Market yesterday evening.


A real guardsman would never appear so wind-swept but then again a real guardsman is wearing a real bearskin cap.

A real Canadian black bear has had to die to produce each and every cap. (Officers caps are made from the skin of the brown bear and dyed.) Think back to the recent Royal Wedding coverage or the Trooping of the Colour to visualise just how many dead bears are involved.

The hunting of the bears often involves considerable cruelty and there is an ongoing campaign to persuade the Ministry of Defence to switch to faux fur caps in future. Faux alternatives, properly brushed, are indistinguishable from the "real" thing, cheaper and involve no cruelty. Beaver hats and leopard skins, used in some military uniforms, have already been replaced with synthetic alternatives.

Those fake bearskins are not only tawdry but are being worn back to front. God, standards are slipping in Her Majesty's Luvvieguards.
